What Are You Reading This Summer?
It’s summer and one of my favorite things to do on vacation is to catch up on my reading.
Long time ago I got my most important lesson concerning growth and success.
When I was in University we used to get every year before the year started a list of 12 or 15 books they wanted us to read before the year started. I didn’t have the money at the time to buy all those imported books, so I went to the university’s library and sat there for 3 weeks from 9:00 in the morning till they closed in the evening – reading every book on the list and some others I found on the shelves.
A whole new world opened up to me.
A few weeks later, when I started my studies, I was surprised (actually shocked) to discover that most of my fellow students didn’t bother to read even one of the recommended books.
The result was that while I was studying I got some assignments and projects to run in my field, due to the fact that my professors realized that I was up-to-date with the latest information in the field due to my reading, while most of my fellow students had to wait three more years before they even got any chance to practice what they have learned.
By that time I had three years experience in the field and I was hiring them to work for me….
This was one of the most valuable lessons I learned early on in my career as an entrepreneur – a lesson which I have continued to implement since then: “keep on reading at least one business book a week – no excuses!”
I believe that after all the personal experiences I had, the seminars I followed and the mentoring I got from successful entrepreneurs – good business books provided me with some of the best inspiration ever…
So, I was wondering which business books have inspired you during your business career…
In the photo on the top, you’ll see some of my favorite business books, but if you press me hard to choose the 3 books that inspired me the most, I’ll probably choose:
What Would Google Do – Jeff Jarvis
Even though this book was written in 2009 it is still one of my favorites in understanding what is the New Economy and what business is all about. It taught me on what to focus in business and what makes a company a GREAT one.
Start with a Why – Simon Sinek
If ever there was a book that explained how to think strategically and what is the essence of business and of GREAT companies it would be this one. From all the business books that I’ve read this is the one that not only spoke to my head but also to my heart.
Blue Ocean Strategy – W. Chan Kim & Renee Mauborgne
Maybe not the easiest book to read, but certainly the most practical and use-able book when it comes to translating how to turn your products, services and business model into a unique and a remarkable one.
Now it’s your turn…
