Just a thought

On August 7, 1485, Henry Tudor landed at Milford Haven in Wales. Think how history would have been changed if he’d slipped on the gangplank, fell into the harbor, and drowned. Obviously, no Bosworth Field. No Tudor dynasty. No break with the Catholic Church. No Dissolution of the monasteries. No Stuart dynasty? A very different England had the Plantangenets continued to reign. On the downside, no Sunne in Splendour. But on the plus side, we’d have been spared so many of those “epics” about the Tudors. So if I could time travel back to that August day, would I have seized my chance and pushed him off the gangplank? Would you?

Steve What! No Bette Davis or Glenda Jackson playing Elizabeth?? What a loss!! :-D The more I learn about Henry VIII and Elizabeth, the less I like them. As a student of Medieval English Literature and an oblate of a Benedictine monastery (although I'm a Protestant), it boggles the mind to remember what the Dissolution did to the monasteries and what masterpieces might have been thrown out with the trash.

Sharon Good point, Steven. I loved Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth, both in the film, Mary Queen of Scots with Vanessa Redgrave and the BBC series.

Leila The "ifs" in history are always intriguing to think about Sharon. I'm with Steven about the Dissolution and the dreadful destruction caused. All the epics on film and TV re the domineering and ruthless Tudors do get somewhat tedious. It would be great if we could have something like Here be Dragons made into a film for a really pleasant change. Life was not only about the Tudors. If Henry Tudor actually did slip and drown?.... Hmmmm now you've got me wondering..... How things might have gone. Perhaps you still would have written Sunne in Splendour but boy! It would have been a very different book. Leila x
