The writing has to say it for you, Julie. And there is no secret formula, is there? :)
I agree. The problem is that I think my work is great...agents etc. don't.
You're a good writer, Julie, no question. I look at it like it's a set of variables. Good writing and good story are only two. Another (and, more likely major piece) is your timing. If your story is submitted to the right editor/agent at the right time when they are looking for that kind of book to sell or when their perception of the market is just so, then your chances of being accepted go up.Are you still submitting?

In the past I've tried every appropriate agent and publisher in the UK, I've since written 12 books and tried now and again submitting with no luck.
I do like being an independent writer, I want the control, but it's the marketing /promoting that's difficult, especially with no money! I write in a variety of genres because I like the challenge and I'd get bored with the same old thing. I like different - but maybe I'm too different?
Who knows, maybe one day - although I'm getting old now...lol
