My Heart is Broken

Today friends alerted me to a book called The Telling , published at Amazon on June 10, 2013. Here's the blurb:

Time in Iraq cost Michael Ritter some of his hearing and a friend whose death he feels responsible for. He'd left Alabama hoping to escape a dull, small-town life, but now, four years later, he's returning, lugging a duffle full of personal demons. Engineering student Jay Ortiz attends college in a place where his heritage and orientation aren't widely accepted. While adjusting to new surroundings he found a soldier's picture. During lonely times he confided in the image of the somber young man, giving his heart away to a stranger. Now that stranger is coming home.

****
Does this sound familiar? It sure did to me. It's the blurb for my first edition of The Telling, a free gift to readers published in 2009. Even the copyright page looks like mine, down to the paraphrased dedication.

I'm not sure why someone would want take my book. To be honest, I'm not a well-known author, and this particular version is loaded with errors. He's offering the story only in paperback, which I've found to not be good sellers, so I'm sure a fortune isn't being made.

Readers left comments on the book, saying I actually wrote it, to which someone who described himself as Mr. Wagner's editor replied that the book had been written in 2005. He proceeded to imply that I'd stolen the book from Mr. Wagner, and claimed to have an attorney handling the matter.

I'm heartsick. This book was a gift of love to readers, and a healing process for me during a difficult time. The 2nd Edition is accidentally earning a small amount of money at Amazon, all ear-marked for charity.  Why would someone do this?

From what I understand, he also appropriated J.P. Barnaby's book Aaron, changing the title to Shane, and even appropriated the work of Fern Michaels.

I'd like to thank everyone who rallied around me during this difficult time. I don't know what I'd have done without your support.

Although I deactivated the first edition, here's the link to the second:

Thank you so much, Deeze. I'm still reeling and cannot understand why he did such a thing. He couldn't possibly have made much money of this book.

Thanks, Macky. I'm told that Fern Michaels is aware of him, and her publisher probably has the ability to deliver a resounding smack.

Deeze Who knows how these peoples minds work.

They must be pretty lonely if they need to steal other peoples work/recognition to feel loved. He probably cheated on his exams too.

Good! I hope he gets his comeuppance and it shouldn't just be a slap on the wrist. Surely there's a law against this with suitable punishment because if there isn't then its very wrong.

Vio Eden, sorry to hear about this, it stinks! Take care and hopefully the shit head gets banned.

I'm not sure what will happen at this point. I'm quite sure Fern Michaels and some of the others have very high-powered attorneys. To be honest, I don't know where to start. This was self-published, so I do not have a publisher's guidance.

Is it wrong that I feel sorry for him? He had to lack faith in himself to take others' work instead of creating his own.

There are definitely laws against it. All the other books have been taken down from Amazon but mine. I was late getting in my take-down letter. Sigh. The evil day job had me in its evil clutches.

Sadonna Have been horribly busy with work this week and just saw this. WTF??? You and J.P. both? Why is Amazon allowing this "person" to put anything up? He's obviously a lying POS. OK, enough ranting.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I love that story and it pisses me off that somebody would do this to anyone, let alone such a lovely person as yourself.

Bastard.

message 16: by Eden (new)

Eden Winters Thank you, Sadonna. Hugs. I never believed that such a thing could happen to me. I thought it only happened to big name authors.

Well sweetie, you're a big name in our book <3

It is truly unbelievable that this person has gotten away with this. I'm wondering how many other people's work he's stolen and what Amazon is going to do about it. It's bad enough these bastards stealing work and posting it at those pirate sites, but to actually try to profit from work that others have sweated and cried over is just unconscionable.

Eden Winters That I know of he stole from me, JP, Sandra Brown and Fern Michaels. Sadly, he published the stolen version of The Telling on June 10. I didn't find out until this week. Thanks to the other authors informing Amazon, his page has been taken down. The listing for my book is still there if you know where to look, but labeled "unavailable". (I sent take down notices.) Quite a few people left reviews stating that the book was really mine. It did my heart much good to read their words of defense and support.
