Afscheid van koning Albert

Koning Albert kondigt vanavond aan dat hij afstand doet van de Belgische troon ten voordele van zijn zoon prins Filip. Koning Albert is moe. De vorige regeringsvorming, die zo'n 500 dagen in beslag nam, is hem niet in de kleren gekropen. Officieel treedt de koning af omwille van zijn hoge leeftijd (79 jaar) en omwille van gezondheidsproblemen. Koning Albert was de zesde koning van de Belgen. Hij is aangetreden in augustus 1993, na de plotse dood van koning Boudewijn. Hij is geboren in 1934 en trouwde op 25-jarige leeftijd met de Italiaanse Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria. Koning Albert is zonder enige twijfel de man die België in de laatste jaren bij elkaar hield. Niet alleen als symbolische gezagsdrager maar vooral ook door zijn vele formele en informele contacten om de plooien glad te strijken tussen de verschillende partijen. Zijn zoon prins Filip werd sinds het overlijden van koning Boudewijn klaargestoomd om de taak van koning op zich te nemen.

King Albert will announce tonight that he renounces the Belgian throne in favor of his son Prince Philippe. King Albert is tired. The previous government formation, which took some 500 days, was extremely exhausting for him.  King Albert was the sixth king of the Belgians. He took office in August 1993, after the sudden death of King Baudouin. He was born in 1934 and married at the age of 25 with the Italian Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria. King Albert is without a doubt the man who held Belgium in recent years together. Not only as a symbolic authority figure but also in his many formal and informal contacts to dissolve the different views of the political parties. One may ask rightly whether with the resignation of King Albert the last true Belgian did not step down.
