Review of a Historical Memoir

Memoirs of Hadrian Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My favorite bit of this memoir was when Hadrian decided to build a 2 feet high wall to keep Scottish people out of England that stretched across the country. Unfortunately it only kept out Scottish dwarfs as the normal sized Scotsmen simply stepped over this ill thought barricade and headed straight to London where they set up home in Tube Stations, drinking whiskey and occasionally throwing up on themselves.

Marie-Jo Fortis What! You read something written by some rude French woman? I did read Mémoires d'Hadrien --en français-- as well, and centuries ago. All I remember is the story of a highly refined, cultured, sophisticated emperor, written in a precise, calculated style. I have no idea whether my memory serves or is playing me.
