My friend James talks zombie walk!!

It all started in the small apartment of a friend of mine back in July of 2010.  There were six of us there and we all loved zombies.  I myself am a zombie fanatic, having written twenty seven different zombie stories I'm comfortable in saying that.  We were all talking about George Romero's latest movie, The Diary of the Dead and the topic of zombie walks came up.

None of us had ever been to one and thought it was a grand thing to do.  Unfortunately, there was only one zombie walk in the state of Kentucky at the time and we'd already missed it.  As we sat there complaining about our bad luck, a simple question was asked.

“Why don't we do our own zombie walk?”

I jumped right on board.  After all, how difficult could it really be?  Make a facebook page, hang up a few flyers, and invite all of our friends.  So, we decided that myself and my friend Tina were going to be the main organizers, splitting the work evenly between us.  We set a date for a meeting to go over all of the details, like when we were going to have it, where we were going to have it, and so forth.  I left my friend's apartment excited about our new project with hundreds of ideas floating around my brain.

By the time the date for the zombie walk came, the equal split of work was out the window.  Myself and my wife Debbie had done everything.  In fact, the “co-organizer” showed up not even dressed as a zombie.  Despite this, we had a successful turnout.  Eighty zombies showed up to walk and all of them had a great time.  The next day we were on the front page of the local paper.  The number of members of our Facebook page tripled within a few days.

My wife and I decided we would definitely run another zombie walk, this time without Tina, who was more work than help.  The next zombie walk was bigger.  We had around 150 zombies with another 100 people following the walk.  As well as the walk, we added a few contests this year.  The best zombie costume and the Best Zombie shuffle.  A few years before, nobody in the sleepy town of Madisonville would ever believe that 200 people dressed as zombies would do their best zombie impersonations across the plaza of our courthouse, but there we were in all of our zombie glory.

Before the walk, we decided that we'd take up donations for the local Humane Society and when it was over, the entire back end of my explorer was filled to bursting with dog food, cat food, cat litter, bleach, and we got some monetary donations as well.

The third year was even bigger with over 200 zombies and another 200 non-zombies walking along with us.  My wife made some fantastic trophies to give out for the winners of the contests with the top prize being “The Golden Foot”, a plastic severed foot that she had spray painted gold.  It was absolutely fabulous and the zombies gave their all to win them.

I know I'm leaving out a lot of details, but this pretty much sums up the three year history of The Madisonville Zombie Walk.  We were the second and most unlikely town to have a zombie walk, but we did it and will continue to do so for hopefully many years to come.

Thanks James! If you haven't done a zombie walk add it to your bucket list of things you have to do once. And I mean dress up and walk as a zombie! :o)
