The end of reading

I teach English literature to a small group of grade 12 students in Toronto, Canada. I asked them recently if any of them had ever read a book for ‘pleasure’. Virtually none of them had. One had read “Twilight”. One laughed and said that the words ‘pleasure’ and books’ didn’t make any sense together. When I had asked the same question in past sessions the answer, overall, was about the same. If anyone had ever read anything they didn’t have to read for school, it was “Twilight” or “Harry Potter”.
