Experiencing Edgar Allan Poe

One of the most enjoyable things about being a novelist is getting the chance to read other authors' books month before publication. When Lynn Cullen, author of The Creation of Eve, asked me to read an advance copy of her next historical novel, I said sure.

When I figured out that the title, Mrs. Poe, meant it was about the Poe, Edgar Allan Poe, I began to stalk my mailbox.  I'd always felt a strange kinship with the man who wrote The Raven, The Masque of the Red Death, The Tell-Tale Heart and other poems and stories.

For about nine years, I lived in an apartment building at 25 West 84th Street, near Columbus Avenue. To get to one of my magazine jobs, I walked over to Broadway to catch the subway downtown, and would glance up at this sign:


Less obvious, but more illuminating, is a plaque found in the wall of a building
