I don’t really need a list, I have a very simple reason or disliking it. It is actively reinforcing every negative stereotype I spend my days trying to break down.
At my store, I have had to actually walk outside and introduce myself to people that are afraid to come in. Comic book stores have an incredibly bad reputation, and some of them deserve it. But mine doesn’t, and I know there are thousands more that don’t either.
My comic store is a warm and safe place. People get kicked out for throwing around hate speech. New readers are loved, welcomed, and sent away with armfuls of books (for less than I should charge them SORRY). Without new readers coming in all of the time, our industry will die out.
And I feel like shows such as Big Bang Theory and Comic Book Men do their best to destroy the work that we (fandom, tumblr, and a new generation of creators) do. BBT portrays nerds as awkward, embarrasing, unable to talk to the opposite sex. Out of touch, ignorant, rude. Out of every 100 nerds I meet, only one is like that. Also let me tell you, nerds are flirty as fuck.
It just…it upsets me. I feel like the comic book/nerd community is portrayed in a more negative light than any other community, and it only serves to hurt us. What I want is a show about young men and women stumbling over a comic book store and embarking on a fucking fantastic journey head-first into nerdom and fandom and all of the amazing things that come with it.
A show that laughs with us, not at us.
And wow that was kind of a novel but, there you have it.

Rebagelable by request! I just….my comic store is my favorite place on earth. It’s my second home, and I feel safer there than I do anywhere else. It actively breaks my heart to see people afraid to share that place with me because it carries the stigma of ‘comic book store’.
