Hello and welcome to the latest stop of my 1st Anniversary Blog Tour & Giveaway. One year has passed since my successful debut novel, Sub-Mission, was released on May 14, 2012, and a lot has happened during those twelve months. I’m taking the chance to look back and tell you a bit about the background of the books I’ve published, but also about things that happened in my life or that are on my mind. There’s one stop for every book, and of course, there are prizes waiting for you, because as always, good things for me mean good things for you, my dear friends and readers. Today I’m sitting down for an interview with the talented S. Dora.
1. What do you love about writing? And what do you hate about it?
There are several things that I adore about writing but above all, it allows me to escape into different realities and, in a way, live different people’s lives. Sometimes when I can focus on writing enough to get into the right headspace, I can delve into a story and connect to my characters to the point where I no longer just write about them but live their story with them. It’s an amazing feeling.
The only downsides to writing or rather to being an author is having to keep an eye on the market. When I wrote just for myself it was easy to go with the flow and let the story take its way, but publishing means settling for some compromises. Oh, and blurbs. I hate writing blurbs.
2. Who is your favourite character? Please tell a bit more about him.
Hm, it’s hard to pick one favourite. All of my characters are wonderful in their own way and I can’t possibly narrow it down to one favourite. The ones who will always be special to me are Noah Conway (Sub-series), Caelan Stokes (Ink, Sweat and Tears) and of course Jazz Spencer (Phoenix). All three of them, different though they are, have issues to deal with and their not always easy to handle, but they’re all very loveable.
3. Do you write one story at a time, or are you a multi-project writer?
I always have several projects on the go. Usually I pick one of them that I focus on and really aim to finish, but if I get stuck or another story calls out to me more, I’ll pursue that.
4. What attracts you to writing m/m and gay fiction?
My characters. They just happen to all be gay guys. Well, seriously now, I just find it a lot easier to write characters that I can relate to. Women and especially their roles in (heterosexual) relationships are mostly a mystery to me, so I find it hard to write about them. Oh, and the sex, of course *grins*
5. What is your favourite book by another writer?
Oh no, you’re asking about favourites again… There are tons of fantastic books out there and naming just one would be unfair. A book I have recently read and that has left a very deep impression was Second Chances by Tom Webb. I also love Harper Fox’s Driftwood, and basically all her books, but I’m also a big fan of the classics. Wuthering Heights is definitely a favourite too. I could go on and on, but those are the ones that come to mind first.
6. What is your ideal writing spot? And what is your actual writing spot?
I love the idea of having a room all to myself and my writing. It doesn’t have to be big, but all in whites, with a thick, fluffy carpet and a comfy sofa or chair that I can curl up in with my laptop.
My actual writing spot is on the sofa, the kitchen table or in bed with either phone or laptop. I’m flexible that way.
7. Can you tell a bit more about your book? Perhaps you’d like to share a little peek with us?
A Taste of Paradise was one of those stories that was begging to be written and it was delightfully easy to write. It holds the record as my fastest written story (nine days) which is probably due to the tropical island setting that made me feel like I was on holiday even though I was working. It’s one of my early works and possibly a little underrated, because it really is a pretty funny and sweet story about two men finding their match when they least expect it. I believe that sometimes a single short moment in a person’s life is enough to change them forever, and that is what happens in Paradise. Riordan is so caught up in his career that he doesn’t even realise that life passes him by and he needs to be forced to slow down and get a different perspective on things. It was fascinating to see him understand what he was missing out on. Marc is also a great character. He comes across all relaxed and easy-going, but he hides a far deeper and fragile side. I really loved seeing those two make their way and open each others’ eyes.
My personal recommendation is to read this book on a sunny day, preferably on the beach and with a cocktail or two in your hand—you’ll understand why when you read it.
A Taste of Paradise
Is one involuntary taste of paradise all it takes to change the lives of Riordan and Marc?
For all his life, Riordan Maguire has chosen his career over feelings.
