Nothing like a slap in the face...

To wake you up in the morning.

AKA, Jessewave's response to my email from last night, in which I expressed my anger and disappointment over her refusal to offer a free copy of Flawless because it features a trans* hero...

"So trans* men aren't real men? Uh, wow. That's about a hundred shades of offensive." (Me)

"Here's the thing -- you went all the way from Lynn saying that we don't post trans* books as free books on the site, to your statement above. While we welcome authors and I promote most of them, this site is primarily for readers and about 95% of the readers have told me over and over what they want to see on the site. The site policy is stated on the right hand sidebar. You may not agree with it but this is the policy here and has been for years.

We also no longer post bisexual books as free books because the last time we did, the winner refused the book. I suppose you find that offensive too. Oh, we also don't post lesbian books or M/M/F menage books as free books.

I have been insulted by a lot of your colleagues in various blog posts, as late as last year, because of this policy, but since my partners and I pay the hosting and associated costs for running the site, which runs into hundreds of dollars annually, with no offset by advertising revenue, and spend a lot of our personal time every day maintaining the site, time we could spend on other activities that make money, no one else can dictate what we post here. You may want to check the larger epublishers to see how many of them offer trans* and bi romances, before you throw insults around.

I have trans* friends whose opinions are important to me and they have no problem with this policy. You write what you want, which is your prerogative. Perhaps you could grant us the same courtesy to post what our readers want."

Of course I grant you that same courtesy, Wave. I'm not disputing your right to post whatever the hell you like. So your stated policy is to exclude books featuring trans* (or bisexual) characters - hey, fine. Doesn't mean I have to like it or support it.

That said, I honestly cannot believe you're trying to play the "I have trans* friends" card. Well, I have trans* friends too - in fact, one of them is my life partner. I'm well-acquainted with the bigotry, hatred and suspicion trans* folk face on a daily basis, and your policy of exclusion only helps to perpetuate this vicious cycle.

But obviously the most important thing here is that I've trampled on your right to be an intolerant bigot. Sorry about that!

Edited to add: If you'd like to read Flawless, you can find it here:

Amazon, Nook, Kobo, All Romance ebooks or directly from Riptide Publishing.

Ije the Devourer of Books I find their policy deeply offensive and incredibly discriminatory. All they need to do is offer the freebie and people can then choose whether or not to ask for it. I don't follow reviews from Jessewave and I will not start either.

I am one of the directors of the Kaleidoscope Trust working for the human rights of LGBT people in countries where it is a crime to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Trans people are highly discriminated against through out the world and they experience high levels of physical attacks in many countries. To read of this policy is a shame, a very big shame.

If review websites and publishing companies cannot speak out for trans people even within the very small gay romance/LGBT romance genre then who will?

I am not surprise they have been insulted by other people. I am amazed that they do not realise how deeply offensive their policy is. I wonder if they post books with a black or ethnic minority character? Who knows maybe that too would be outside the realms of what their readers want.

A disgraceful policy. Utterly disgraceful

Gina Grant So one person turned down a free book that wasn't to her taste and that informs their entire policy? Hey, I didn't want the free coffee I was offered yesterday at Starbucks. Will they stop carrying coffee now?

I do understand what she's feeling. It's her sandbox which she built at her own expense, time, effort, and continues to monitor and maintain, but if she's kicking people out of her sandbox because they don't adhere to her rigid rules, they have a word for that. Perhaps she just hasn't looked at it that way.

I just love how none of this is her fault - it's all about what the readers want. And last time I checked, there was a whole list of people on her site who hadn't claimed free books they'd won.

It's sad, seeing a site dedicated to spreading the word about m/m fiction clinging so hard to trans* and bi-phobia.

Aleksandr Voinov Amazing to see a spade offended by being called a spade.

Aleksandr Voinov There is a reason that blog does not receive any of my books as review copies.

She's not getting any more of mine either. Which is fine by me, since she's hated the last two or three.

Macky What a derogatory policy. Its appalling. Sorry but I won't be visiting Jessewave any time soon. How can a site that promotes m/m be so obtuse around other members of LGBTQ community. Its unbelievable. Why people have such a terrible attitude to trans people I really can't fathom. Shame on them.

Aleksandr Voinov *hugs* I'm finding reviews/ratings very lowly correlated with sales, but even so, some blogs are way more important than others.

This is true. Though even a bad review can sometimes boost sales. Me, I'd rather be known for writing books people actually like.

Aleksandr Voinov Cat - oh, definitely. Good reviews and good sales are the nicest possible outcome. :) And not least, it's nice for the ego. That said, books sell by word of mouth, and no amount of blogging and no one site on its own kicks off that process, in my humble view.

Yeah, I've pretty much given up on the whole blog tour - promo till you drop thing. Everybody else is doing the same damn thing. There's no way to break through the noise.

Going to cons seems to be - for me, at least - the best way to connect with readers. That, and writing more books. Although I don't know how you keep up such a prodigious output with everything else you have on your plate.

Aleksandr Voinov Cat - Pure adrenaline, and a set of extremely good co-writers who kick my ass. On my own, I'm a lot slower. :)

LOL! I could use some adrenaline - mine's all dried up since menopause kicked in. Maybe I should take up sky-diving...
