Philip Jose Farmer

I remember reading somewhere at some point in the Dark Ages, an article from Philip Jose Farmer where he explained that his real name was Joseph Ackerman.
-Jose came from Joseph.
-An "acre-man" would be a farmer.
-and then he just added a little fillip. or Philip.

Am I the only person who remembers this?
