Game of Thrones Thoughts (on Sunday instead of Monday)

Last week got away from me, so let’s just dive back in.

1. We’re officially off the rails, people!

I suspected that in the next season readers would start to have a viewing experience that was closer to the experience of non-series-readers. Definitely didn’t expect it to happen so soon, and… I’m not sorry. Mostly because I was broken hearted over the idea of losing Gendry and because I feel like we’re getting a few spoilers for where we may be headed post book 5. That said, some of the deviation (e.g. the revelation re Sansa’s wedding) seemed to undercut the power of the narrative. Lotta talking.

2. Why are we wasting time with Sam and Gilly and discussions of venison stew? I say this as a great lover of stew.

3. Ros. Oh Ros. They built you up just to use you so cruelly. Please note that Ros didn’t speak a word in this episode. She was wholly reduced to object. She was effing set dressing. And if anyone starts yapping about St. Sebastian, I will punch you in the eye.

Too tired to say more now. Next week should be a good one.

I’m keeping faith with you show. I want to believe.
