Just as the landscape of Dante’s Purgatory is very different from that of Hell, the second book of Dante’s Divine Comedy is a radical change from Inferno. Unlike Inferno, Purgatorio is a book of hope and transformation. Although the structure of the poem is the same, the mood is very different.
Dante’s trip to Hell took him down to the center of the earth and continued out the other end. Dante’s ‘geography’ places the entrance of Hell at Jerusalem with the island of Purgatory being located at the exact opposite side of the earth.
