Colonel Esseline Robinson was on administrative leave helping her niece, Ariana, adjust to living with Essie after the deaths of Ari’s mother and father.

The adjustment period is interrupted when Ari discovers a body at the archaeology lab where she works. Essie is now back on the job, as Planetary Police Chief of Ascendant, dealing with the emotions of her teenaged niece, her gallivanting parents, her detective partner, her ex-husband, and sundry office politics.

Tension mounts with the addition of a series of alien artifact thefts, numerous seemingly-unrelated murders, and aliens determined to cause havoc with the human civilizations of ten planets.
