And I call myself a sci-fi buff!
I love anything to do with science fiction; books, films, TV series. Don’t get me wrong, you won’t find me at Star Trek conventions, but I did have the hots for Mulder.
I was surrounded by pulp science-fiction as a youngster. I’m not talking about a few dozen books, but hundreds of second hand paperbacks. I’m also a sucker for a gripping conspiracy theory (think Area 51), but would lump all that under the heading ‘science fiction’ too.
So, I grew up with sci-fi, read and watch sci-fi, and I even write sci-fi. So, if I’m the proverbial pig in clover, what’s my problem? Let me explain.
I’ve got the worst memory of anybody I know; If you asked me about the current book I’m reading, I’ll be happy to divulge I’m enjoying it, but I can’t remember the book title. If pushed (and my life depended upon it) I’d hazard a guess at the author. I’d probably still get it wrong.
Then there are films. A case in point is ‘Fifth Element’ which I watched over the weekend. It’s classic sci-fi, with great cast (Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Milla Jovovich etc) , and I’ve watched it half a dozen times. I still don’t know how it ends! (a result of me being too tired to stay up, and confusion about the record button).
So, my deep seated concern is this; I really can’t call my self a sci-fi lover with such a poor grip on the basics. Is there a bright side to my strife? Well, I can enjoy a film again and again. I can list my top ten by the precious few I can remember the ending of. Books are a bit more frustrating (I’m a slow reader as well). Mind you, who else could read their own writing and be truly surprised at what happens next? Mr A. thinks it’s a little odd, to say the least. Your mind playing tricks on you when writing, is the subject of a future blog.
Now, how was this blog supposed to end? If I take a few minutes, I may remember…just maybe…
