I love these informative posts. I also have heard that blonde is the noun for females but blond is the adjective?Love the Mark Twain quote!
Judging by how quickly you publish, I agree that you don't have writer's block! It's nice to have another career because if I don't feel like writing, I don't write.
Aw, Zebedee! Cute.
This series is FANTASTIC, Maria! Thanks so much.
Thanks, Jen! I'm glad you have found the series informative :) I thought it would be a nice idea to just list a few of the things I've learnt so that other writers might not make so many of my mistakes LOLThat Mark Twain quote is great, I have definitely found it helpful. It's weird how a lot of the time we repeat certain words in our writing, and we don't always notice them until we read over the manuscript a few times. Nowadays, part of my editing process is to use the 'find' and 'replace' funtion and look for words that I might keep repeating. Some common ones I have found in my own writing are: seem, seemed, seeming, realise, realising, as if, almost. Darcia also alerted me to another common one when she did a beta read for me recently; a lot of writers use 'that' too much in their books, and many times it can be deleted without any detrimental effect on the prose.
I, like you, also have a day job, and perhaps that may be why we don't notice 'writer's block' as being a problem. I suppose if you're writing for a living and can't come up with a story, you would start to panic. But I also think that working is a good way to get inspiration, because you're constantly meeting people and being thrown into situations that you would otherwise miss if you sit at a desk in a darkened room alone with your computer all day. The ideal, I think, would be to work part time and write the rest of the time. I don't sell enough books to be able to go part time, but if/when my sales take off, it's something I plan on.
Yes, I have also heard that the adjective is blond. So if you're just talking about hair, you'd use the word 'blond'.
Thanks for your lovely comments. :)
I love that idea of part time work and part time writing. I've thought of that as an ideal situation as well! Our careers give us LOADS of great ideas for our stories. :-)
Thanks for the useful tips, Maria. I'm glad I'm not the only one who understands about blonde /blond and I agree that writer's block does not exist...if I'm 'stuck' on a scene, for example, I'll write in another project. It's not the writing, it's sometimes the characters refusing to lead me as they usually do. :/X - how about x-rated - my new book, 13...it may keep you awake at night? lol hey, had to try.
Thanks for all you do in support of authors.
Thanks, Julie! Glad you found the tips useful.X-rated is a good one, Julie. Particularly because most people seem to prefer those types of books... probably where I am going wrong. :(
I have 13 waiting for me on my Kindle :)
Yes, I know what you mean. I only wrote 13 because I wanted to test my writing and see if I could write this kind of story, not because of fashion. I can only ever write for me. And your books are great, maybe one day the folks out there will want quality, writing that makes them think, not titillation. Not that there have been many sales of any of my work - sigh - oh well, it won't stop me. :)
