Pets in Books

When reading a story, do you enjoy when one of the characters has a pet? Do you feel like it adds to the story?

I love adding pets to my books. A majority of my books have one in it somehow and I try to have the pet throughout the story. Some a little more than usual. And each pet is based off a pet I know or have.

Moxy from Amber's Muse - my dear friend had just gotten her own puppy Boston terrier. And the puppy was so cute and energetic. It was perfect for the story.

Toby from Accidental Love - I have a lab myself and we had just finished dog training when I wrote this one, adding bits and pieces of things I had learned.

And if there has been a cat in the story, you better believe its one I have already - since I have six cats. I love reading stories with pets in it. I feel like it can add so much to a story, big or small. Pets add humor. The online book club I am in, we recently read The Best Man by Kristen Higgins. A golden retriever was featured though out this story. And Blue (the dog) really added some laugh out loud moments.

Not to be too picky, but if you're going to add a pet, they've got to have some personality to be memorable.
