It’s not just as simple as writing a story…

With stories such as the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon, or Amanda Hocking, or John Locke, many people seem convinced that writing is the new way to strike it rich. Just write a book (good or bad – doesn’t really matter), get an awesome cover and then ‘POOF’ you’ll be a best seller overnight. I’ve had a few emails of late from aspiring writers who seem convinced that a. I must be making HEAPS of dosh, and b.I must have a secret recipe and would I mind ever so much sharing it??Okay. Here it is ladies and gentleman, the guaranteed method of success *drumroll*
Yeah, sorry to burst anyone’s bubble – but there isn’t one. No, I’m not making HEAPS of dosh, but yes I am finally seeing monthly cheques from Amazon. Which has only taken four years of hard work and over 80,000 free downloads of my first novel. I would love, so very much, to be able to write fulltime, but at the current rate of sales I can honestly say it’s not likely for a very long time (and at least another 4 books). Even then, I can’t guarantee it. Sales are not a stable income. I wish that writing a good book was a shoo-in to success but I have read so many a-m-a-z-i-n-g indie books that are lost amongst the 1.6million plus ebooks available on Amazon.I very much understand the frustration of trying to get your book out there, trying to get it read. All I can say, is don’t stop trying. Do try thinking outside the box and make sure you keep writing!! Remember, some of the current ‘big sellers’ have actually been around for years and only now are getting noticed. Charlene Harris who writes the Sookie Stackhouse novels (that the T.V series True Blood is inspired from) has been a writer for 25 years. No overnight success there, but that’s the brilliance of books and ebooks; they don’t just vanish and you never know WHO might find them! Always support other indies and don’t give in to jealousy, it gets you nowhere—try to remember, there’s no such thing as competition when it comes to books. Just because someone reads the newest biggest bestseller of the moment doesn’t mean they won’t decide to read your book next.Take care all!Nic The Arrival, available FREE at at Amazon : AmazonUK : Barnes & Noble : iTunes US : iTunes UK : Kobo : Smashwords Awakening available at Amazon : AmazonUK : Barnes & Noble : Smashwords : iTunes US : iTunes UKFeel the Burn available at Amazon : AmazonUK : Smashwords : Kobo : iTunes US : iTunes UK : Barnes & Noble
