You Catch More Flies With Honey Than Vinegar
You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things? Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin? ~Romans 2:1-4 (NLT)
I think one of the biggest battles Christians face is overcoming the tendency to be judgmental. Humans place degrees on sin, but God doesn't. In His eyes, one sin is as bad as another.
Yet in spite of our unrighteousness, God loves us completely and He proved it at the cross. He is kind, tolerant and patient.
If He is so gracious to us, shouldn't we extend the same graciousness to others--especially to those who are lost?
Hitting people over the head with their sin doesn't get very far.
An axiom that my mom has always said comes to mind: "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar."
If we are nothing but vinegar to the outside world, I don't believe we stand much chance of winning them to Christ. Only as we demonstrate His love and grace will they see a glimpse of our good, glorious and gracious God.
Oh Father God, how grateful we are for Your kindness, love, patience, tolerance and grace toward us. Thank You for not counting our sins against us, but instead providing a way for us to come back to You through Christ. Lord, as we try to live a life that models You before a lost world, help us to remember Your grace and extend it to others. Amen.
