Hello!

Hello! Now that I’ve left my career as a university professor to be a full-time writer, I thought I’d reach out and try to become more connected to others who love reading, writing, and SF/F. I think I should start by confessing that I’ve never been good at coming up with interesting, insightful nuggets to share with the world. Most of my activity on Facebook involves “liking” witty and insightful things that my friends write. I’m much more comfortable putting words into the mouths of my characters. In fact, I never seem to get tired of doing that, which is one of the reasons I took the plunge to write full time. I’m not one of those writers who has to overcome resistance, avoid distractions, stop procrastinating and get my butt in the seat. It’s the opposite for me – even if I've been at it for hours, I crave more time to write. I love writing.

What often keeps my butt out of my writing chair (I write in a recliner that faces a window looking out into our backyard) is our twin four-year-olds, Hannah and Miles. Weekends and evenings, all of my time and attention are focused on the dynamic duo.

I’m excited about the upcoming release of my third novel, Love Minus Eighty. I’ll talk about the title a little more in another post, but for now, have you seen the cover?? It is all kinds of incredible. The book itself will have a semi-transparent vellum jacket, so the jacket and the cover itself form one image, then the image changes somewhat when you take the jacket off. The folks at Orbit Books have done a remarkable job.

Love Minus Eighty is based on my short story “Bridesicle”, which won a Hugo Award in 2009. The original story is mostly in the novel, but Mira’s story is only one of the three interconnected stories that make up the novel.

“Bridesicle” has been optioned for a feature film by Film4 Productions, the people who made Slumdog Millionaire, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and a million other wonderful films. No word yet on whether a movie is forthcoming.

There’s a giveaway for three copies of Love Minus Eighty running right now. I'll be happy to sign those copies for the winners. I’ll run another giveaway as soon as the book is released, which will be JUNE 11. I can’t wait. In the meantime, back to work on novel #5, which is titled Faller. Novel #4, Defenders, is basically complete and with Orbit, to be released in 2014. I’ll talk more about that one another time.

Thank you for reading! I’ll be checking in again soon.

Ariel I have a question! I couldn't ever quite picture what the creches in Love Minus Eighty looked like... were they essentially just drawers, like in a morgue? Or were the more like glassed in cribs, like in a nursery? I'd love to know what you were picturing! (...or perhaps I'll just wait for the movie. ;)

Will McIntosh Hi Ariel,

The way I pictured them, the tops and sides of the creche were glass, while the foot was solid, so when you looked at the wall, it was all solid, but once a "bridesicle" slid out, she's hanging suspended, wrapped in the silver blanket.

Thanks for writing!

Ariel Thanks so much, Will! Next question: since the original story has been optioned, have you ever daydreamed about who you'd like to see playing each of the major protagonists?

message 4: by Will (new)

Will McIntosh Hi Ariel,

The option has actually expired, so it's back on the market. But assuming someone else picks it up, I'll have to think about my dream cast. I'll get back to you...

message 5: by Ariel (new)

Ariel Can't believe they let it expire! This story is screaming for an adaptation. Can't wait to hear who your dream players are...

Will McIntosh Okay Ariel, here's what I came up with:

Winter: Kiera Knightly
Rob: John Cho
Mira: Liv Tyler (she's 36, but I think she can play 27)
Nathan: Henry Cavill
Lorelei: I'm stumped. I need a tall, gorgeous, cocky woman with a diverse ethnic background. I think it will have to be a newcomer.

Kelsey Stilson Hi Will,

1) You are hands down my favorite author right now
2) How many different types of relationships are there in the 'Love Minus Eighty'-verse? I was really intrigued by the platonic vs. love relationships and their implications for how we view human bonding today (full disclosure: I am in a womance right now).

Thank you,

Kelsey

Will McIntosh Hi Kelsey!

I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying my books - thanks for the kind words.

I've never actually laid out all of the types of relationships, though I envision that there are dozens of them in this future. I'm friends with two women who have lived together for decades in a platonic friendship, and that got me thinking that there are so many ways people can be close to each other, but we only "legitimize" a few of those. I think it's something I'll probably explore further at some point.

Thanks so much for posting.

Best,
Will

Kelsey Stilson No problem! Your work is keeping me sane during grad school (not to mention provoking a great deal of thought). I hope you don't mind if I ask more questions in the future.

I've given my copy of 'Love Minus Eighty' to the gastroenterologist next door to read and one of the neighborhood kids gets it next!
