Timeless?

What makes a work timeless?

I just read John Wyndhams "The Day of the Triffids" again for the first time in about 20 years. Now, apart from some of the language that the author uses within the book; words that have fallen out of use over the years, it seems as fresh and relevant as the day it was written.

This prompted some questions for me as a writer. Is it the quality of the writing that makes it timeless? Is it the lack of references to items that could date it to within a decade (iPhone?) or is it my imagination that is bringing it out of the past and updating it for me?

What do you think?
