Welcome to my Back List Blast post for March 17. Today I want to tell you about my third release, Unknown Futures. This story is a science fiction erotic lesbian romance, which released from Decadent Publishing as part of their 1Night Stand line on January 3, 2012.
I wrote this story after several readers asked for more of Frey and Carrie from Celestial Seduction. I wanted to continue their story, but I could not think of a story for just them. So I brought in new characters, and had the stars of Celestial Seduction as minor characters.
Here’s an excerpt from Unknown Futures:
“Miss Jewel Barnaby?”
Her eyes darted toward the tall, austere man in surprise, nervous tension knotting her shoulders. She almost didn’t respond. No one had called her Jewel since she’d left the hospital two years ago. Instead they called her ugly, freak, or monster. The doctors had done all they could, but despite the several surgeries and multiple, painful skin grafts, everyone in Prescott, Ontario would always know her as the girl who was splashed in the face with acid on the biggest night of her teenage life.
They’d been in his garage, grabbing blankets for the after-prom party. When he’d tried to get fresh with her, she’d had to tell him, a jock through and through, she wouldn’t sleep with him, that she’d preferred women. But he didn’t take no for an answer. Pinned against his truck, her heart racing in panic, she kneed him in the groin. Doubled over, he’d grabbed sulfuric acid from a shelf behind him and splashed it in her face. Everything after that moment became a blur until she woke up in a hospital, groggy with painkillers, a tube stuck down her throat. She couldn’t see a thing with the bandages covering her eyes, but felt and heard her mother by her side.
From then on, some of her neighbors looked at her with disgust, sympathy, or fear. Others glanced away when she passed, as if she didn’t exist, including her old friends.
The chauffeur simply smiled at her as he reached for her two oversized suitcases. His professional, impassive demeanor calmed some of the butterflies dancing in her stomach.
Standing on the curb, she stared down the road, sure neighbors spied out their windows, wondering why a limo would be picking her up. I need a break from this place. As she slid over the leather seat of the Ford Excursion limousine, her stomach tightened. Madame Evangeline’s text had been brief. Pack for two weeks. The limo will meet you in front of your building in an hour. She’d had no time to do anything but change and throw clothes in a suitcase.
Until now. Had applying to 1Night Stand really been a good idea? She could end up with her date running away, screaming. And why had Madame Evangeline told her to pack for two weeks when her date was only supposed to last one night?

Just read Unknown Futures earlier cus of free books...They are like cake, and I am a child. lol More in depth sequel for Jewel and V. Make it happen. *snaps fingers* ;)
Hey Tabatha! I'm glad you enjoyed this story, and would like more. :) Right now, I'm working on The Underground series. But when inspiration strikes for a sequel to Unknown Futures, I will write it. It took over a year to come up with the sequel to the first book in The Underground series. But I'll definitely try. :)

I can totally relate. At least you have your heavy course load at school as an excuse. I have a bunch of stories to finish, and you just added another. LOL Let's both get writing!! :DThanks! I'm writing the third, and this will definitely finish this series off. It's a sci-fi dystopian series, with GLBT romance elements. Different than my other stories, but I've had a lot of fun planning and writing them. :)

Yeah I should be doing homework right now but your stories are distracting me. A much needed distraction from all that work! Yeah I should write again. Why haven't I? Maybe college depresses me too much! LOL Nah I think it's more the lack of free time. Somehow I found more free time this weekend, I must be forgetting something
Maybe I'll finish my homework and if I have time before bed I will write a couple hundred words...Better than none at all.
I say never limit yourself, always explore new character options, you never know what can happen! When I write, I let the characters guide me and tell me their stories. Sometimes, it's completely different than what I had in mind.
I love Sci-fi Dystopia! You may end up just being one of my favorite writers ever if you keep this up. lol

I map it out in my mind then see if that's what happens in the story based on characters experiences. it usually turns out well, and if it doesn't, I scrap it into a scrap pile then rewrite it.

Maping it out in your mind is still outlining. I have to write that information down now, or else I'll forget it. LOL Partially from age, and partially from all of the other stories zinging around in my mind. :D

I keep getting cool ideas for stories. I had one today but I forgot it by the time i had some paper to write anything down. Sometimes I start a story then let it veg. You should see some of the outlines I have. LOL The next one I'm writing on my to-write list is going to be completely changed from the original outline. I'm very open and rarely stick to it.
Oh, did you know they have waterproof notepads that you can use in the shower? That's where most of my best story ideas develop. :)

I have a bunch of my stories in storage right now cus I don't have room cus I don't have my own house atm. I'm staying with a friend...which really means I should get to writing to make a few bucks. lol Maybe to help me get a place. My to-write list is long and I'm so under motivated. How do you stay motivated to write?
WTF Waterproof Notepads? That's awesome. That's a good place to write if you can do it. :) I can't seem to find anywhere to write. One of my buddies is suppose to be giving my manuscript a read cus I'm unsure about this one chapter and am not sure what it needs, but it appears he's been busy lately. I think it's hanging me up right now.
How do I stay motivated? I don't. I just get to the point where the voices in my head drive me nuts, and I have to write the story down. It's weird because once I get the story down, I love the editing part. I'm lucky to have wonderful critique partners, and fabulous editors whom I work with. They do help keep me motivated as well. And, of course, my readers. :)Yes! I saw them on Amazon, but only the American site, which doesn't work for me, because I'm not paying the shipping to another country.
Have you heard of critique circle? http://www.critiquecircle.com/ I know a lot of authors have found CPs through that. :)
I'm so use to the voices in my head. I thought they were me for a long time. In a way I guess all characters we write are parts of ourselves, but then we modify them to meet the standards of a story format. Haha. ;)Yeah having to pay shipping costs overseas sucks.
I'd feel weird having some random person read my story I think. Cus I'd like to think I'm a pretty good writer and I don't want someone stealing my stuff. You know what I mean?
That's a common fear of many. But once you find the right person/people, you'll know. I actually met my CPs online. I've never met them in person, but I do trust them with my stuff. It's easier to start small with a chapter or two, and see if the feedback is what you're looking for. My first critique group was a local one that I found through the local library. They enjoyed the sci-fi aspects of my stories, but not so much the romance. So, that's when I grew more dependent on my online CPs. And I stopped going to the local one. But I learned a lot from them, and I continue to learn from my CPs and editors, with every story.
Hard to find the right people, been browsing around for a while. Kinda gave up lol. I find a lot of people are lazy, too busy, or seem like they have better things to do. Got some awesome feedback in my creative writing class last semester though. I wish I could take creative writing for forever. Super good feed back in classes like that. People were forced to make time to read it, and I think maybe one person was disappointed with the 2 chapters I provided, but that's because she's not into fantasy novels. I thought about sharing some of my action related material, perhaps my sci-fi material. It just never happened. Instead, I just provided them with a couple of chapters of my fantasy novel.
You must have some really good CP's that provide good criticism to help you come out with that awesome stuff.
That does happen, unfortunately. You have to find someone who can give things both ways. Critique partners are a give and take relationship. Some fantasy authors I know are Lorna Suzuki and Heather McCorkle. Lorna helped me find my first critique partner. We were both reading her book at the same time, and she introduced us over twitter. That was in 2010. And I know Heather used critique circle to find hers.
I met my others through Six Sentence Sunday (which has ended) and through other author groups. I'd say get involved in author groups, and share your work in author memes. Many of them, you don't have to be published to participate. One I participate in is Hump Day Hook on Wednesdays. There is also Weekend Writing Warriors, and many others. If you participate faithfully, and visit at least some of the others (in your genre), you can make great friends, and find CPs and beta readers. :)

Yeah I have lots of writing buddies, and I'm always like 'wanna swap critique?' lol They are usually like "sure" then it doesn't happen and I'm like "why?" lol
I'm gunna have to take the time to check out some of these things you've mentioned.
As I said, you just have to find the right people. Sometimes it takes a while, but you will. :)
