Lightbringer #3 Update (Early 2013)

“So when’s the next book out, Weeks?”

When I was on my book tour a few months ago, I expressed my hope that the next book in The Lightbringer Series might, might be out in a year. (I was careful not to promise: I’ve learned from others’ mistakes!) So now, of course, with fans having patiently waited for five whole months (!) I’m getting more emails asking, “Hey, when can I further fund your lavish lavish lifestyle, O Master Weeks?”* (*actual quotes may bear no relation to reality)

Neil Gaiman might tell you that you haven’t any right to ask. I gave you a good story, o book buyer, so shut up.** (**Not an accurate paraphrase) But as I made the mistake of publicly disagreeing with an SFF icon, it seems to me I should put up or shut up. So here’s the word in brief: No New Lightbringer Book from Weeks in 2013.

For those of you who want to know a bit of the why, continue reading.

You epic fantasy fans may be familiar with Tolkien’s quote that “the story grew in the telling.” So it’s been with The Lightbringer Series. I’d planned for book 3 to be a bit shorter. (By which I mean 600+ pages, about the length of The Way of Shadows and Shadow’s Edge–not short books.) I’m a fairly consistent daily producer of pages, and if I’d made this book as long as I’d planned it to be, it would indeed have been published late this year. But… it’s longer. It’s longer than The Way of Shadows. It’s longer than Shadow’s Edge. It’s now longer than Beyond the Shadows. It will likely be longer than The Black Prism.

The work? It’s going well. I’m really pleased with the progress of this one. Where I was proud of The Blinding Knife because the story flew–high tension to high tension to surprise, with the world expanding and characters deepening all over the place–in this next book I’ve chosen to deepen the resonance while keeping a breakneck pace and not adding any fluff. (Title still to be determined. I’ve been calling it The Blood Mirror just to call it something, but that works better as a title for book 4, and my editor hasn’t liked any alternative titles I’ve proposed yet. Nor, to be honest, have I.)

It’s been my philosophy to write the best books I can, as fast as I can. To be honest, where I am in my career, I could make the most money by cranking out books faster.

But I’m making a living writing–that is my wildest dream, and you fans have given that to me. I have no interest in “cranking out books” to put as much of your money in my pocket as possible. I believe I owe my fans and myself the best stories I have it in me to tell. In this case, that means some more waiting for all of us. I’ve had long talks with my agent and editor about this, and they are both successful enough and wise enough that they’ve told me to get it right, to have fun with it, and to make it the best book it can be.

The writing is going brilliantly. I haven’t been stuck once. (Well, not for more than a day or so.) Yesterday, I finished a scene I think will stick with you, maybe forever. There are loose ends to be tied. There are hints to add about the series resolution. There’s a finale to write. I’m productive, having fun, and writing as well or better than I’ve ever written in my life.

I understand if that isn’t happening fast enough for you. I simply hope that when I give you the final product, it will more than make up for the wait.

You can expect another longish update on or before September 2013.

Tabby Puckett Take your time!

While I, of course, would love to pick up the third book as soon as I finish the second, I know that's not very probable. I'm having so much fun being in the world that I want the third one to be the best it can be.

I appreciate your honesty about where you are and, at least for this fan, will wait until you think it's ready!

Relstuart Thanks for the update. =)

message 3: by Tony (new)

Tony Fecteau I can't wait to read it... Love the characters and how the story is playing out. Take your time, and tell us a great story.

message 4: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Thank you for the update!!! The Blinding Knife is perhaps one of the top three books I have ever read, and I have read hundreds. I'm greatful for having the opportunity to immerse myself in such a story, especially one with such rich and real characters.

I will look forward to your update in September!

message 5: by Brent (new)

Brent Weeks Thank you all for your gracious replies. I was a bit nervous about how everyone would take it, but I want to be forthright. So thanks for going easy on me!

message 6: by Oni (new)

Oni Well, nice to hear from you about the update.

But there are always two sides of the story:

If the readers are angry because your books are not out yet, it means they are your fans, which is a good news (or bad news because they are harassing you).

If the readers are not angry, it means, they have been reading other books, which might be a bad news (or good news, because you have less pressure).

Personally, I am not that bothered by the delay. Hey, there are plenty of books out there to read. But I have to admit, I enjoy you book immensely.
And if you have done this one exceptionally well, I will even buy the collectible sets. So take your time...

message 7: by Michael Gorey (new)

Michael Gorey I've yet to read the first book of the light bringer series but I can't wait until I do. If they are even close to as good as the night angel trilogy I'm sure it is worth the wait!!! I'm sure other people see it that way too. So take your time and impress us with your incredible writing ability even more then you already have!

Jeanette Brent wrote: "Thank you all for your gracious replies. I was a bit nervous about how everyone would take it, but I want to be forthright. So thanks for going easy on me!"

Personally I will wait as long as it takes.

It is your being forthright and communicative that I as a a reader and fan appreciate.

Artemas All good things to those who wait. I'm sure the last book in the series will be awesome Brent! Don't feel bad about not getting a book out this year. You are still much faster than GRR Martin. ;)

message 10: by SARIT (new)

SARIT Take your time, I am sure it is going to be worthy. :)

message 11: by Jean-carlo (new)

Jean-carlo well i am a bit sad about the delay but the trade off is fair and i think we are still getting the better deal,
I much rather wait and get the book exactly like you imagined it for us.
Your the guide on this epic journey and we shall stay at the busstop till you bring the next bus around
cheers,

JC

message 12: by Sara (new)

Sara Hemenway I am very excited to read the next book, but I would much rather have it be the way YOU want it than to have it sooner and have it maybe not be quite as good. There's no way I will forget to pick up the next one, no matter how many books I read between now and then.

So relax, keep writing, make it the best you feel it can be, surprise us, excite us... We will be here whenever it is released!!

message 13: by Pete (new)

Pete Guy The tricky bit is rembering all the different series where I am waiting for the next one. Good books take time to write, despite me need to know what happens next.

message 15: by Rez (new)

Rez Delnava Thanks for the update. I'm excited that the third is going to be longer; maybe it will take me more than the four days it took me to read (and re-read, it was that good) the last one. I'm also disappointed that this also means I have to wait that much longer for your return to the world set-up in your Night Angel trilogy.

Now I don't know anything about the next volume, but I will be so bold as to throw a few titles for the third into the mix:
Refracted Son
Opaline Tide (dual reference to both Gunney's ship and the amassed forces of the Color Wights)
Just my $0.02; but it may not be such a bad idea to cull your audience on ideas for the title--even if you don't pick one from the fans, you get ideas and feedback on what title words or phrases are likely to sell well.

message 16: by Pia (new)

Pia Margić You should've just quoted Gaiman with "George R.R. Martin is not your bitch." and say you're not our bitch either... Though I wonder if we can make reddits favourite artist, Shitty_Watercolour, make a peace of art on that quote :D :O *.*

message 17: by Rbette1299 (new)

Rbette1299 For a writer of your caliber, it's forgivable to take more than a year to write a very high quality story. Anything beyond two years though definitely leads to reader angst. Take the time to do it well.

message 18: by Jesse (new)

Jesse Houwing As long as you don't launch at the same time as the 3rd Kingkiller Chronicle book :)

message 19: by Chris (new)

Chris Zimmitti I'm so excited for this next book its killing me. I recently acquired the complete trilogy book of the Night Angel series and have been reading that when ever free time presents itself. Since i'm re-reading this 3 book epic im definitely picking up things that I missed the first time. Take you time Brent!
After reading the second book i really want to soak that ending and apply it to what i think is coming in book three. So many mysteries yet unanswered and so many thoughts and plots already twisting in my head. I can't wait to see what you have planned.

I'm also happy to hear that their is a 4th book after that?

Keep on trucking. I love your writing and will re-read everything when its all finished like i'm doing with the night angel series.

Good luck in the coming months!

message 20: by Moni (new)

Moni I have read all your books so far and I have not been disappointed. I know that I would like the book to be released earlier but, I would hate to say after I read it, it could be better. So, take your time writing and let your die hard fans, as myself, wait. Keep up the great work!

message 21: by Nick (last edited Jul 07, 2013 06:54PM) (new)

Nick Paul I just joined now, hence why this is such a late reply. I finished "The Blinding Knife" a few days ago and, I have to say, it really solidified you as my current favourite writer. I don't know what it is, exactly, but your writing is incredibly compelling. You know how to tell a story, how to create three-dimensional characters, and, most importantly, how to keep your reader engaged.

Thank you for the countless hours of enjoyment you have brought me, good sir. I eagerly await your next novel. And since I'll be finishing my MA up in August, I'll finally have time to read what I want, when I want for the first time in five years - so count me in for a first-day purchase!
