So I wanted to draw this little reference to show the difference between different members of the corvidae family. It sort of got out of hand… And now I think wings are a huge pain in the ass to draw and I never want to see a bird again.

wait is there a difference between a raven and a crow

i thought raven was just the american name for a crow now im confused

American crows are called just that, American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos).  Ravens share the genus Corvus, but tend to be larger.  There are a ton of species of both crows and ravens, though, and some of the differences depend on the species being compared.

Quick reference to tell American crows from most ravens, or How Trav Won An Argument With A Biology Student: watch their tails.  A crow has a fan/shell tail.  A raven has a spade tail.  The beaks are also different, as pictured, but the tails are easier to spot at a distance.  (For the record, I said the big black birds on campus were crows.  I was right.)

PS: I like that magpies are “a tiding.”
