Thoughts from an e-reader rookie

So I've had my Kobo Glo e-reader since Christmas (thanks, family!), and have read several books on it (from library and purchased), and have also read some physical books in the interim.

So....my thoughts, in no particular order.

* Love the instant gratification. I want that book....hey, here it is! It's slightly less "instant" when it's a library digital copy, but that's because my Kobo is not a tablet and so the steps involve my laptop and a cord. But STILL.

* It encourages promiscuous reading, because by only moving my pointer finger I can switch books. I have taken to reading a new novel plus a classic at the same time. I read EMMA by Jane Austen in this way.

* The "percentage complete" is not as helpful to me as the physical sense of holding a book and noting how much thickness remains. Also, I forget not to take it literally. I thought in GONE GIRL I had many pages left but then BOOM, over. Because of bonus material at the end.

* I sometimes accidentally turn a page by bumping the screen with my finger or the bedspread (I do a lot of reading in bed.)

* Speaking of page turns, I read fast enough that I'm touching to turn the page often. But I'm getting used to it.

*I like the Kobo Glo's light. Good for insomniac nights and doesn't involve clipping a light to the spine and trying to aim it etc. Plus the brighteness is adjustable.

* The battery life is terrific, and there is no eyestrain at all when the light is off. A paper-reading experience on a screen still blows my mind.

* I could read on my phone and sync up bookmarks with the Kobo app but I hate this idea and don't plan to do it. Too small of a screen.

* One non-fiction book I bought I had read before, and was missing several chapters, and the copy of Pride and Prejudice I just downloaded is missing all of the correspondence within the story. That's awfully important. Kobo has been good about crediting my account, but in physical books, it's rare to have content just missing like that. What if I missed content in a book I hadn't read before? Would I notice?

* Recently I finished the book I was reading when away from home, and I could easily select the next book.

* Oh! I thought of one more to add. I still want physical copies of books I really love. I think that comes from the pleasure of seeing them on the shelf. I adored BEAUTIFUL RUINS by Jess Walter, and now I want the actual book, even though I have the digital copy.

I'm glad I have it! I have finally arrived in this century, I think.

Jane I find I'm checking the 'percentage complete' (I equate this to the 'range anxiety' I had when I first bought my electric car!!), because I too like to know when the story is about over, to help guage what should be happening & when.
BTW, I have an 'original' Nook, and a Kindle with a touch screen. Both are nice in their own way.

Karen Like you, I do enjoy my e-reader, but I also still like the feel of an actual book. I prefer reading my kindle when I'm on the treadmill because it stands up better and turns pages easier than a real book.
