Author Interviews from Blog Tour

During last month's Harbour Falls Blog Tour I had the chance to participate in two author interviews. In case you missed them, here they are:

Interview #1 at Musings From An Addicted Reader (Thank you, Em!!!)

Interview:

What is your quirk when writing?

Hmmm... I don't really have any major quirks, but I do always have to write at the same laptop. It's an older one, but the creative juices just flow when I'm pecking away at the keys.

What motivated to become a writer?

I loved writing from the time I was a kid, but I didn't have the courage to share my words with the world until more recently. I have all these stories in my head and it feels great to bring them to life on paper.

Did you draw inspiration for Harbour Falls from an event, music, etc?

I did actually! The setting--an isolated, foggy island--came to me after watching Shutter Island on dvd. And the mystery part of Harbour Falls came into play when I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I loved the idea that the key to a mystery could hinge on a single photograph.

Rapid-Fire Questions:

Ice cream...chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate

Movies or books? Books!!!

Interview #2 at Simply Infatuated

If Harbour Falls became a movie, who would you cast as Maddy and Adam?

Ooh, great question! For Maddy I would cast Jennifer Lawrence. I think she’d be perfect for the role. Adam is a bit tougher. There’s a picture out there of a male model holding a puppy. I don’t know his name, but my friends and I agree he would make an absolutely perfect Adam. Until I can figure out who model-with-a-puppy is though—and if he even acts for that matter—I think Ian Somerhalder, with his black hair and blue eyes, would be a superb Adam.

The story takes place in Maine. Have you ever been there or did you develop the setting through research?

I’ve been to Maine a couple of times. A few years ago I vacationed in Bar Harbor. One afternoon we traveled up route 1 to Lubec, Maine and into New Brunswick, Canada. I remember lots of fog and plenty of rain, the perfect setting for Harbour Falls.

When did you develop the title Harbour Falls–before, during, or after–writing the novel?

I tried out a bunch of different titles, and one day I was like: Hey, Harbour Falls… I like the sound of that one best!

Why did you choose to write a Mystery/Romance novel?

Well I always intended on the story being a romance, but the mystery part was inspired by the movie Shutter Island and the book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The movie inspired the setting, a mysterious, foggy island. As for the book, I loved the idea of a photograph being the key to unraveling the mystery.

Will all of the books in the trilogy follow Maddy or will the main character switch with each novel?

All three will be told from Maddy’s point-of-view.

What POV do you prefer to write in? Why?

First person, for sure. I think it’s the best point-of-view to really throw the reader into the action.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Go to a mysterious island—like Maddy does in Harbour Falls—and find a hot guy. No, no. I’m just kidding.

I try to take a few days break or write something else for awhile. Just to mix things up.

Both ways sounds good to me Do you have a method for developing your characters or do you let them develop as you write?

I always kind of have an idea of who my characters are, but I sometimes end up surprised by some of the things they do as I write about them. It’s true that they take on a life of their own.

Who is your favorite author? Is your writing style similar?

I love just about anything written by Stephen King, but I also love Janet Fitch. I think her writing style has probably influenced me greatly.

What kind of music do you like?

Rock, pop, alternative—those would be the top three. But I like a mix of almost everything. I’m currently addicted to Song Pop app on my phone. Lol
