One of my favorite parts in Paradise Lost is when Eve wakes up in Paradise for the first time, and the first thing she sees and falls in love with is not Adam or God or an animal, but her own reflection, and it’s this beautiful moment that establishes her autonomy and vanity. It’s so human to me, and I love that Milton sort of tramples all over the misogyny in Genesis.
