At My Signing Yesterday...

…in Greensboro, North Carolina, I actually cried three times.

1) A expectant couple asked me to sign a Batgirl for their daughter, who had not yet been born.

2) Two lovely, smiling sisters came in, they had driven a long distance, and one told me that after being diagnosed with a chronic illness, she had begun retreating from everyone and isolating herself from the world, but that reading Batgirl ‘snapped her out of it,’ and that now she is back to interacting with the world.

3)  A lovely mom came, waited in line with a big stack of books for me to sign…her daughter is a huge reader of mine, a beautiful, talented young girl of sixteen who could not make it to the event, so her mom came FOR her. The girl had been through a very rough year and had survived a very serious car accident just a couple months ago. I loved that her mother came to get her books signed for her—I talked to the girl by phone and it was a very moving moment.

Additionally, this was just a big smiley moment, but a wonderful young lady came through the line and said that she had been struggling with her identity, but the moment she read stories with Scandal Savage, she realized that she was gay, and came to terms with it, so Secret Six, of all books, helped her come out to herself and her loved ones. Wow.

Other stuff that was great, there were awesome Batgirl and Big Barda cosplayers, lots of young women who are aspiring to make comics, and one of my favorite things….

…this guy, a manly dude named Caleb came up and said, “I am a stereotypical guy. I like sports, beards, and meat.

And I read Batgirl and love it.”

That made me smile. :)

What a signing! The event didn’t start until 11:00, but people waited in the cold since 6:45. I felt very worried for them!  I stayed an extra hour or so to make sure everyone got everything signed that they wanted.

Wonderful store, ACME COMICS, in Greensboro, NC.  I signed a bunch of books for the shelves if you want one and couldn’t make it.

Great staff, lovely hosts. I wish they were closer so I could come back.

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who came to the signing, it meant a LOT to me to get to meet you all!
