Writing and Human Towers and what the heck they have to do with each other.
So here’s the deal. My friend sent this video to me, and I couldn’t help, but relate this team building/human tower exercise to writing a book. (Well, I am a author you know. Not a hard stretch.)
These people struggle and struggle, each human body a link in the chain, I can’t help but see how it’s the same when writing a book. Bear with me please as I try to connect these two totally unrelated things in a transparent attempt to through up interesting content on my blog.
Each person needs to do their part just as each scene in a book needs to do its part. If the base is weak the tower will never stand. If a character’s motivation is weak there’s no way the book will make readers believe.
One weak link, or one weak scene, and the whole thing can come tumbling down. And some times, okay most times, when that happens the whole thing is lost. Hence, bullet number three.
Sometimes you gotta tear the whole thing down in order to make it to the top. In the human towers the people fell, the towers failed, but the people got back up and tried again. Not only that, but the people all had the same job, position, place in the chain. All they did was get back in there and make the tower stronger. Same with a book. Sometimes when you tear the whole thing down you end up with a lot of the same scenes, characters, and motivations, but they just had to be built a little stronger.
At the very end of the video the human links peeled away, and a single file human tower remained in the center. That was the end goal. Same with a book. When an author is able to peel away all the extra words and fluff and have remaining the solid core, then that’s good writing.
I hope you enjoyed the video and my author-like ramblings. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought.
