Skeptical Five Year-Old

One of the best parts of my work is connecting with my audiences. I always mention at puppet shows and author visits that the book Nalah and the Pink Tiger is based on a real little girl: my niece. It was she who invented the pink tiger and inspired my first children's book.

One day, when I happened to be doing a reading at our local co-op to a group of kids, I saw one little boy wrinkling his brow more and more as the story went on. When we got to the part where Percival the Pig and Tico the Tiger are having a toothpaste fight in the bathroom, he could remain silent no longer. He burst out with:

"Wait a minute. Do you mean to say all of this really happened?"

He was pretty sure he was being sold a bill of goods. Oh, to be five again!
