Review: Run, Witch, Run by Jonathan Grimm

Run, Witch, Run Run, Witch, Run by Jonathan Grimm

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Run, Witch, Run is a fun little series starter.

The story features, Rachel, a seventeen year old orphan from Romania just coming into her powers.

She's dealing with much more than her fair share of troubles: adoptive parents who are over the fun of having a kid, mysterious stalkers who who may not be entirely human (and some who are definitely not),and a tiny blond Mountain Witch (a breed of being, rather than a profession) who befriends her but has her own secrets. As the name implies, Rachel decides to make a run for it. Her plans go astray when she falls ill and can no longer take care of herself.

At the same time, Detective Sergeant Candice Strong is investigating a string of young girls who have disappeared under strange circumstances. All have one thing in common, a connection to someone called "ThinkingOfYou".

A third story emerges after Rachel runs into a guy, Eric, and his dad when she first takes off on her own. At first I couldn't be sure why the story kept returning to them, but by the end I had a good idea. Clever little twist if I'm right, but I won't know until I read the sequel.

I really loved how the author juggles the different perspectives. It's almost like three stories in one, and they're all woven in together wonderfully. I also like the Mountain Witches, who remind me of petulent little grandmothers running around crafting, dancing and stealing eachother's prized sewing machines for the fun of it. The writing is solid and flows well.

The story almost lost me for a bit in the middle when the main story took a surprising turn, but I stuck with it and came away satisfied. It all makes sense in the end. Also, for a while I thought Eric was a little kid, but he turns out to be a teenager.

Overall, I think this is an excellent story that a fan of contemporary fantasy and YA would enjoy.
