Things to Do, Places to Go

I'm often asked how I manage to balance writing time with all the rest of the busyness that comes with the job -- promotion, marketing, taxes...heck, just answering email! Looking back, I think trying to keep up with everything was a contributing factor to my burn out. I used to have a 48 hour rule for answering email, then it turned into a week, then it turned into...Heeeeelp, I'm drowning...

I guess a lot of the email could be turned over to my trusty virtual assistant, but no. People are writing Josh Lanyon. Whatever they have to say, it is for Josh Lanyon to hear it and respond to it. Eventually.

So I'm still exploring all the possibilities for making the best use of my time. Of course I know now that I have to build in time off, take breaks, take deep breaths, spend time with family and friends and the guy who gets very testy when I don't show up to dinner. I was trying to create a regular schedule, nine to five and weekends off, but...it just doesn't work that way.

There are days I can't write until quite late or at all because something else has come up -- sometimes it's work related like listening to audio files or uploading files or commissioning covers or filling out tax forms or...just...stuff. There's just a never ending parade of stuff to deal with. That's the life of a small business owner, which is what a professional writer is.

So nine to five doesn't really work. It's got to stay a little more fluid to accomodate the ebb and flow of the creative tide as well as the realities of running a small business. I won't deny it's a heady pleasure to get to figure out how you want to arrange your own work schedule. I mean, I well remember the days (years) when my work schedule was arranged by others.

What seems to be working right now is a four day writing work and then three days of writing business and working on other projects. That seems to deal with my creative restlessness and give me enough time to do things like grocery shop, go to therapy, answer emails, do edits, etc. I just noticed today that what it doesn't include is an actual time off weekend, but maybe I don't need that so much as I need to be able to take time when I do feel like a break. That's probably more like it. I don't want to feel guilty if I use Wednesday to go to lunch with a friend.

For the sake of my wrists, I have to limit how much actual typing I do, but beyond that, it's pretty relaxed and that seems to be working. I'm moving forward slowly but surely. I finished that ugly rough draft of Blood Red Butterfly, worked on the outlines for Winter Kill and Stranger on the Shore, got back to work on The Boy With the Painful Tattoo, and Monday I'm back filling in the blanks (chasms) of Blood Red Butterfly. I guess the proof as to whether this works or not will be at the end of this week when I see whether I have actually finished BRB on schedule. If not, I'll have to reevaluate because, while I'm all for keeping things loose and creative, I do still have to pay the bills!

Johanna Glad to hear that you have found a schedule, a rhythm, that works for you, Josh. And I trust that the guy who gets very testy when you don't show up to dinner also gets very testy if you'll forget to allow yourself enough time off. ;)

I don't think there is another author out there that spends so much time talking to his fans as you do. We love you and I have a suspicion you love us too. XD

My point is: We'd rather have a happy Josh who writes than a frazzled Josh who feels bad about not spending enough time answering mail/messages/comments.

I met "The Wall" a few years ago. Darn, that wall is hard and unyielding. It took me five years to climb over it. You are taking the right steps and taking care of yourself. Keep doing that, because I love you.

You're so sweet. But no. I am berating myself for starting out the year with such a stiff challenge. I initially thought of this as just a little fun throwaway for fans and to support the effort of my Japanese publishers. But...me being me...it's now an obsessive endeavor to try and successfully meld tropes in yaoi and m/m.

Sometimes I think I'm a slow learner!

But you're right. I do love my readers. And I am very grateful to them.

Which is part of the pressure, I guess. I never want to let anyone down!

Did you ever read Falls Chance Ranch Josh? Because you seem to want to make everything perfect all the time. Just like me, just like a certain someone in that book :) LOL!

Well the plots themselves seem to lend themselves to tightly proscribed roles and high drama and lots of misunderstandings. All of which are the antithesis of my writing! :-D

But I'm having fun trying to balance at least a nod to the tropes even as I'm working to make the story make sense and be essentially Lanyonesque.

Doesn't ring a bell. Who wrote it?

It's free online fiction: Falls Chance Ranch Blurb doesn't say much but if you want to have a look at it I can send you my file. You have to be a member of the Yahoo! group to download it.

Idamus I'm glad you've found a schedule that works, now you just need to stick to it and not fall back into the bad habits :)
I'd rather have few Josh stories than none...

One thing I'm learning: bad habits are not easy to break! And this isn't even an addiction like caffeine or cigarettes.

There's a fair bit of spanking. If that's not for you, then.....I should feel ashamed for putting you onto this, because if you get hooked? You can't stop reading! Just ask Josephine Myles. LOL! My fault!

It's where they posted the complete parts. It's easier to access when you just want to try it, but the discussion is in the yahoo-group. :)

message 27: by Katharina (new)

Katharina So, when I read this, it feels frighteningly familiar to me. I'm a scientist not a writer, but that also means a lot of deadlines, doing a whole lot of different stuff at the same time, no fixed schedules, and definitely no 9 to 5 working. Which is good and bad as well, since you're free to do things how you want, but it also forces you to work all self-regulatory, and boy can that be difficult. There were a couple of months last year when I really let things go over the top, worked very long days and weekends and together with a long-distance relationship, well, it wasn't a good idea. At the end of it, I got sick a lot and missed a couple of weeks of work, and... I just felt lost, unmotivated, unsure. It was pretty bad, really. Bottom line is: all the work and stress was pretty much for nothing.
So now, I take my time, take time off when it gets too much, and read non-work-related books every chance I get. Which is not easy, because the deadlines look pretty dreadful.

It sounds like you've found a good way out of the chaos, and I really hope for you it works out well. It's too easy too fall into the work-all-the-time-trap, especially if you love what you do. It isn't healthy, though, and long-term-wise I'm sure it'll help a lot just to get your head cleared free of work and preoccupied with different things every now and then.
I wish you all the best, Josh! I love your books, so for purely selfish reasons on my side, please take good care of yourself!

Me neither, but I found the first part of ''Falls Chance Ranch'' very instructive for persons suffering from acute perfectionism ;-).
