What are they good for sometimes?

Of course there is the general answer of companionship. Working around the house.
Cracking the whip and making them do things around the house for you especially when you're sick. They can lift heavy things or help around the house.

However, the time that you want to kill them is when they get you sick.
Oh the times that they get you sick no matter how much you try to stay healthy.
