I haven't been this charmed by a pilot for teens since Glee's. The prequel to the much-loved Sex and the City, The Carrie Diaries takes you to a world of mandatory stockings, landlines as lifelines, and big, sparkly everything. But underneath all that is a lot of heart. Young Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) is dealing with her mom's death, and her heart-tugging conversations with her dad—who's actually not supposed to be here, according to SATC canon—is one of the many things that ground the show. Glam but grounded, that's how I see it so far.
