Christian Devotional - Marriage

My husband and I just celebrated our 15th
wedding anniversary a little over a week ago. This weekend, we’re taking some
time to celebrate, so today’s devotional is going to be brief J

I am amazed how many people find out how long we’ve been
married and think it’s some huge and amazing accomplishment. Maybe in today’s
society reaching 15 years of marriage is some amazing milestone, but I just
look at my parents who have been married 38 years and my grandparents and both sets
had been married over 50 years before one or both went to be with the Lord. In
comparison, 15 years still sounds like newly-weds.

So today, as my anniversary gift to you, I want to tell
you the secret of our success. Commitment. We are both committed to loving
and following God and as a result, we are both committed to serving each other.
We love each other very much, in fact, no one on earth knows me better than my
husband. But, there are plenty of times when we get frustrated and angry with
each other. Even in the midst of our most heated arguments and discussions,
the “d-word” isn’t even an option so we know that we’ve got to find a way to
work it out. We are committed to God first and to each other second.

Genesis 2:24 “For this reason a man shall leave his
father and his mother, and be joined to his wife, and they become one flesh.”

This verse displays the commitment that is necessary to
make a marriage work. I will tell you that being committed to God first makes
being committed to my husband easier. I can rest in God knowing that He will
give me what I need to glorify Him in my relationship with my husband. We can
truly be joined together in all that we are and do. I can plan for the “us”
instead of just the “me.”

So remember, feelings of love come and go. Happiness
fades. But, if we are committed to God first in our marriage and second our
spouse (not our kids second, that’s a whole other topic for a post sometime),
we will bring God glory in all that we do together for Him.

This is a truth I will be taking to heart for the next 15 years…and
the 15 years after that…and the 15 years…. Well, you get the idea!

Jim Hughes Great insight! A commitment to the process of being married will cure most of the divorce rate. When we do it God's way, we are able to keep our vows until death do us part.
