Christmas Day was rough for me. Ryan was his normal self but I felt self
conscious and awkward around him. My
feelings were still too close to the surface.
As much as I wanted to be his friend, it felt impossible. I could tell dad was miffed at mom for making
me feel uncomfortable. There was a short,
related but unrelated, fight between the two of them at the dinner table. Ryan left shortly after. He called me the next day.
“I didn’t mean to
create tension. Your Mom was so
insistent that I come. I figured you two
had talked about it. I should have asked
you. Are your folks okay?” he asked.
