I totally agree. I use critique partners to help me edit. One of my critique partners does line editing professionally. Beta readers also help. Its basically a team effort. I put that same effort into their writings as well.I am in 100% agreement there are many aspects of self-publishing that can be done inexpensively, or free.
And I agree, there are very few if any instances where an intermediary is necessary in self-publishing. :)
Well, that agent lost me with the book she so proudly said she helped. I immediately think less of her. Reading the rest of your blog post. Yikes. It's even worse than I thought.
BA, Travis, there are people touting for payment for reviews too. £95 for a professional review. What!!!

Aah, how cruel and a sensitive soul like you! I got a few reviews wiped by Amazon supposedly for financial gain. There had been none, not a penny cent. Really annoyed me. They wouldn't say why, where information was from or who accused me. Then the penny dropped. It was writers who commented and thanked me for my review I created, their good manners meant no financial or any other gain. They stopped then but never put them back.
BA, Carol, I have never paid for a review, and I have had some that were so awesome they made me realize I am doing the right thing.I have had some nasty ones too. Bibliophiles take their reading seriously, they get emotional about their reviews.
I have never seen one of the reviews on my novels dropped, and none of the very few I have done were ever dropped. But I hear the horror stories about it left and right.
Sucks.

I took a look at your book reviews and ratings. Your score is really high. ^_^ Many people loved your books. I see one of my friends spanked it bad. It's interesting since I'll see if what bothered her bothers me too. If there really is a lot of POV changing, then that is a problem. It is disorienting and many first time published writers struggle with this one. I've mentioned this in several of my reviews to for new writers as a suggestion to change going forward.

There is no reason for any writer to have to pay an intermediary person to do this. It is just a person leeching off another persons financial potential and makes me angry.
