Made the mistake of reading this piece on “New Adult” in Jezebel.

You wanna talk smack about Young Adult or New Adult? FINE. But do us a favor and do it without insulting the audience.

It’s the same insidious crap as the term “mommy porn.”

It’s the rap romance has been getting for years.

It’s the tacky pieces that show up laughing about soccer moms who buy Adele CDs at Starbucks.

It’s the nonsense that shows up again and again telling us that YA readers are too mush-headed to understand the difference between fact and fiction, between reality and fantasy.

When women or girls exert power over the market, people wig the hell out. And the only way they seem to be able to deal with it is to attack the buyers— to demean them, to laugh at them, to tag them as stupid, or bourgeois, or stunted. It’s just so much easier than actually talking about, oh say, THE BOOKS.
