Generations & Greatness: August/September 2008 Issue

Every one of us are a byproduct of genetic history. Within our genes exist the physical, mental and spiritual history of our ancestors and bits and pieces of the characteristics of every human that has walked this planet earth. Africans who have never mixed with other populations are said to have the strongest and purest genes and genetic code because, they descend from the first copy of what God intended man and Woman to be.

Within the genetic code exists all the history of Man. When you pray you are summoning and calling on all the spirits of your ancestors to assist and enlighten you in your time of need. In the western world we are taught to pray to God. If praying is a part of seeking through spiritual channels than before one can reach God there stands the souls of all those before us because, we are all connected in one way or another, since life evolved from one source.

To know the gifts and shortcomings we all possess it’s important to know your family history. All of the traits your ancestors possessed lie within you. My love for literature may have seemed to be my choice. But deep within my psyche the yearning for the written word was there before I consciously realized it. In the 4th grade I would write misspelled words over and over to remember how to spell them. In our class we had reading groups, which were based on how well you could read and pronounce words. I excelled right away and was always called on by the teacher to read or spell a word no one else could.

I published my first book and didn’t even know one of my sisters was seeking to publish a poetry book. That’s how much of a secret our writings were to one another. Three years ago I learned that one of her sons likes to write stories. I’m sitting there in her living room watching TV and he pulls out a notebook and starts writing. When he showed me what he wrote I was astonished b/c it was only about a page and a half story, but it was really good, especially, for a 12 years old. My niece is 16 years old and now I give her books to read weekly. But I didn’t know she was into books until one day she told me she read my sophomore novel “No Love Lost”. Her brother graduated high school this year and surprisingly he’s going away to college for journalism. I never he even thought he had an interest in literature because he never talked about books or writing. I’m looking forward to building my company Third Eye Publishing so he can one day become the Senior Editor. The ego that I have I would like to think that my writing career has everything to do with my younger family members having an interest in writing and reading, but when I look at all the similarities and our likes I recognize that genetics has more to do with it than anything else.

Even though my family history hasn’t been the best I have to admit that I at one time was a very bad example to my younger sisters and brother, nephews and niece. But I do believe in change and I definitely believe in leading by example. My families later generations will not experience the same hardships I’ve faced, nor will they walk the same path. I’m laying down a foundation today which will enable my family to build a better tomorrow. My nephews and nieces and future children will all benefit from what I’m doing. They will not be like most African American 20yrs olds wondering about what awaits them in this world. They will know that my dad and uncle have this and that for me to do. Through this lesson they will be taught to do the same thing for their cousins, nephews and nieces. This is how great families have and are been built. But it always takes that one mind to set things in motion. For my family I’m that person.
The challenge for today’s families is to pick the pieces up which were left by those before them and plant seeds to grow bigger and stronger trees than the generation which past. Even if you were born into a family of millionaires, nothing should be taken for granted and you should be seeking to take the next generation into the billionaire status. The Kennedy’s would not be the American experience that they are had it not been for the sacrifices made by Jack Kennedy who was by a far a very daring and courageous man.

Generational Greatness is something we all should be striving for. It is the reason why we carry our last names proudly as to say “we are such and such, and we stand and represent this and that.”
