Before getting back to guns and taxes, those hardy perennials of American politics, a quick update from Britain, where I just spent a few days, and where things are going from bad to worse for David Cameron and his Conservative-Liberal coalition. A couple of weeks ago, I noted the failure of the government’s austerity politics, but that’s only the beginning of Cameron’s troubles. While trying to fend off demands to switch course on his economic policy, he is facing internal splits on a series of incendiary issues, from Europe to immigration to gay marriage. According to a poll in Tuesday’s edition of the Times, support for the Conservatives has fallen to twenty-nine per cent, the lowest level since the Prime Minister took over as leader in 2005, pledging to modernize the party and soften its rough edges.
