Mr Suit by Nigel Bird. It’s okay to laugh at murder.
Mr. Suit by Nigel Bird is like The Three Stooges—but people actually die.
It’s a screwball noir, a slapstick comedy splashed with a bucket of blood. It’s eighty pages of a refreshingly original plot. Mr. Suit centers on an incompetent and dysfunctional crime family that is in desperate need of counseling. It’s pure comedy watching these back-stabbers fumble over their own plans for big time cash. The mob, of course, wants nothing more than to give them a piano wire scarf.
In this book, humanity is like desperate gambler in Las Vegas trying to pawn his wedding ring for another shot at the tables. The characters in Mr. Suit are driven by fear and greed. They use sex for revenge and love as a poker chip. People are presented as tragically pathetic to the point where it’s funny. The times they try to do good end in scenes of spectacular failure, mini masterpieces of bad humor. Mr. Suit builds up like a house of card that’s grown too tall. You know it’s going to fall, but how and on whom? Somebody is going to have a very bad day.
Mr. Suit was a hilarious novel. The line between villains and protagonists is a line of dust on a windy day. There’s some very creative writing in this book that had me laughing out loud. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy noir, pulp, murder mysteries, dark comedies, and enjoy those little gems of weird writing.
I was impressed at how Nigel managed to put a tremendous personality into a character that is completely paralyzed except for his eyes. This is difficult to do and he makes it look easy. He is a writer that can immediately bring his characters to life. There isn’t a bunch of side tracking in this book. It stays nicely on the main story and develops quickly.
You’ll feel like an evil bastard for enjoying this book. Reading Mr. Suit is like turning on the 6 o’clock and laughing at everyone that died.
Nigel has a devilish mind for dark comedy— thank god.
