The apartment above the Golden Lamp Pawnshop was quiet. Piri sat in a wing-backed chair reading a book. The lamp next to it illuminated her worn copy of Macbeth.

She looked up and peered down the hallway. She had turned the chair so that she could easily see Dior’s bedroom door. It was still closed.

Asami sat cross-legged on the floor. She placed a bowl on the floor in front of her, closed her eyes and flipped a playing card up into the air. The card would flutter down, flying this way and that, until it landed in the bowl. She would then move the bowl again and flip another card. She wasn’t trying to get the card into the bowl. She was placing the bowl where the card was going to land. It was her favorite game.

Piri glanced down the hall again.

“Not yet.” Asami told her.

“What is she doing in there?” Piri asked.

“Things are not going as she planned.” Asami said softly. “She needs to put more pressure on them.”
