What Is Not Protected by Copyright

I have a novella called "The Vanishing". There is a movie with the same title. Someone I know was panicking because I was in danger of violating copyright. I knew I wasn't, but I had to dig up the proof so this person would leave me alone. Since I went through the trouble of finding it, I am passing this along to anyone else who might want to know what is not protected by copyright.
