Spoiler Alert: the end of “The Age of Innocence”

So I was kind of heartbroken when Newland was finally to be reunited with the Countess Olenska, thanks to his grown son, and yet he did not accompany Dallas up to her Paris flat.  Frozen with fear he waited on the bench downstairs and after awhile chose to go back to his hotel alone.  The End.  Or was it?  I believe that is where the book ended, but not the story.  And that something did happen between them.  Perhaps not that night, but maybe the next day or the following week.  Decisions of the heart can be a low burn, and sometimes just need time to percolate.  What do you think?  I want to know.51mYmH034iL._AA160_
