I’ll admit I’m a DC gal and as such don’t know much about the expanded details of Captain America as, say, Batman. But this is one thing that I’ve seen occasional evidence of that I really like: his mother was the person in his life that most engendered the later, central beliefs that make him the hero he is. Contrast with Martha Wayne. We know Batman is who he is because of the loss of his parents, so stories that remind the reader specifically what he lost by showing is relationship with them while alive are to be expected. But stories that actually focus on any memorable moments or even specific stories about his mother in this are in the minority. I can think of three off the top of my head, two of them by the same writer. On the other hand, references to his father, his father’s house, his father’s business (despite the fact that Thomas was a doctor who spent long hours in surgery, while Martha was the philanthropist putting their money to good use) are numerous. In Batman Begins Martha doesn’t even have any lines. In the last big event before the New 52, we saw a parallel universe where instead of the elder Waynes dying in an alley, their son did. The tragedy motivates Thomas to become that universe’s Batman. Martha becomes Batwoman, you say?
The Joker.
Anyway. We need more heroes who were taught stuff by their moms as well as their dads.
