The Economics of Publishing, Part Three: The Value of Time

For the past few weeks, Spirited Press has conducted a mini-analysis of the economics of the publishing industry, and how it relates to publishing through the traditional methods vs. self-publishing with assistance. For more, please see the previous blog posts, Part I and Part II.
Today, we'd like to cover a shorter, but nonetheless important aspect of publishing: the value of your time. You've just finished a book. Chances are you have invested a lot of time into that. Now, you want to share your work with the world, and that is something that can also become a time-consuming process. But it doesn't have to be. The choice is yours to make.
Attempting to publish through a larger, traditional publisher takes a lot of time. Researching, sending queries, waiting for answers. You could spend hours upon hours, and never receive a positive reply. Even with the help of a literary agent, or agency, it can take years to get an advance or book deal from a big-name publisher. From there, it takes a minimum of six to nine months to get the book on the market.
On the other hand, publishing yourself puts you in control of the path your book takes! It will still take a certain amount of digging to find the right fit, but if you trust your instincts and let your intuition be your guide, you will soon align yourself with an assisted self-publisher with the same principles as you. When you find the right match, you will know.
An assisted self-publishing company like Spirited Press offers you, as a writer, more of a working relationship than the traditional publishers. We do not buy the rights to your book. We do not advance, or loan, you money. You name the selling price of your material. We offer a higher royalty rate than most companies. And, you can publish your book in as little as three days! How is that for turn-around time?
Assisted self-publishing is a great option for writers who want their words read NOW, not a few years down the road. You control your life. You control your destiny. Why should you not control your work?
