First, thanks to everyone who stopped by my Black Friday Blog Hop Post. Buffy Kennedy was my winner. I've emailed you to claim your prize. On Saturday I posted a picture of my breakfast on
Twitter and I got a lot of responses. Mostly wondering what the round green things were.
No, my breakfast doesn't normally come on silver platterThis is actually the first time I've been in India while they are in season, so I had to do some investigating via Google Images after they were served for dessert the night before. Turns out they are called
sugar apples. Apparently the Indians around here call them custard apples though. I have to say, they do not taste like apples or custard, but they are very sweet.
Apparently, you can get good at telling from the outside how much fruit is on the inside. This one has pretty big little teardrop shapes, so I was hoping for lots of fruit and not a lot of seeds.
Success! So, basically you break it open and then just start eating. As you break the fruit off the big black seed (look like watermelon seeds, but bigger), you can spit out the parts you don't want. It is a messy process, but I have to say that I am overall impressed.
Especially considering they only sell them in boxes of 100 for about $2 a box. Yep, delicious and cheap.
