The Betrayals of Grim's Peak has all the earmarks of a great series - there is a hint of disaster, a hint of romance to come, and a plentiful dollop of mystery and fantasy.
Augie who was found alone as an infant suddenly is pulled from the only family he has ever known in very scary circumstances to find himself being led back into the one thing that scares him the most- the ocean.
He never understood why he had such a deep fear of water and that will all change as he follows his new friend Mira and her kind to an underwater world he never knew existed.
Sean Quirk has done a great job of envisioning a world filled with sea horse/dragon creatures that people use as transportation, vicious wolves, mer people and sea witches. The story moves quickly and you will begin to pick up on Augie's part in what is happening underwater easily. I did find it odd that Augie was able to leave his adoptive parents so easily but I think the story will pick back up with them later.
I know this is listed as a young adult book but I feel it would do well in the older children's market. It has no more violence/romance than Rick Riordan's Lightning Thief series.
